Happily married asked:

I would like one that is compatible with my wii, and mp3 player, and also has a dvd player (full system) I would like to spend $100-$400, and it is for use with my projector in my movie room.
I’m looking at the Sony DAV-HDX500/i BRAVIA Home Theater System and it says it has an mp3 hook up etc… a wii won’t hook up to that?

  2. Uhhhhh…

    A good mid-range receiver is about $500-$800.

You probably want a BluRay player, not a standard DVD player and these run about $400.

Then the speaker set … there are some small ones for $600-$1200, but the subwoofer is extra.

For 1-4 hundred you are looking at a cheap Sony, Phillips all-in-one system. We get 2-3 posts per week from people here who bought these only to discover there is no expandability:

    - Your wii wont connect to it
    - Your mp3 player wont connect to it
    - Your CATV box wont connect to it

It only plays DVD’s on the built-in player. You cannot hook up anything else.

Nothing in this price range can be considered “the best”.

Now I did buy my daughter a HTIB for Christmass. It was a Denon unit, but ran about $700. The parts all looked like they could be sold separately so she can upgrade parts/swap things as she wishes. I put a link to an Onkyo system that is similar below for $700.
