I myself am not a big fan of the whole “home theatre in a (small) box” concept, but depending on your needs and budget, that might be the best way out. You are right, 150$ is nothing to spend on a home theatre sound system, but for the upper range of your price range, you can get some pretty decent (budget stuff). I myself would recommend looking at fry’s(frys.com) if you don’t have the store too close. In store they have some pretty decent sounding polk audio towers for $100 a pair, couple those with a ligtly used receiver found on craigslist, a couple of small satellites and an inexpensive center channel speaker

You should look up the Logitech models.
