I have a sony home theatre. . when the volume hits a certian point (about 36) the speakers shut off and the display reads “protect” . . this is very annoying as it happens when the music is not particularly loud. . anyone know how to make it stop?

  1. I assume you have it hooked up to the speakers it came with. In that case it’s most likely not you overloading your amp because of low impedence speakers.

The most likely cause is a short caused by a stray wire or wire with a hole in it somewhere. Take out the speaker wires from your receiver one by one and let the music play with only 4 out of the 5 speakers connected(assuming you have a powered subwoofer). If the problem goes away with one of the wires disconnected, try replacing that wire with new wire. This should fix it.

  2. The system is protecting itself because your speakers are
presenting too much of a load on the amplifier. Either get
some 8 Ohm speakers or a better receiver than can han-
    dle a tougher speaker load.

  3. Polarity problems.. Check your +/- connection on your wires, make sure that there is no stray wire that touches the other pole behind the speakers (creating a short).

Take a toothpick and make sure that there is no connection between the positive and negative poles at your speakers and your receiver… also make sure that the + from the receiver is connected to the + at your speaker…
