I love Yamaha receivers, but I would own Denon because of their great reputation.
But Onkyo is winning “Best Receiver of the Year” awards with their TXSR-505, 605, 705 receivers. They start about $499 and pack flagship-type features like HDMI up-conversion, switching, etc.

the harmon kardon 7.2 AVR 745 receiver is good and moderately priced.

You can find it online for about $850.00.
It decodes ALL surround formats being either lpcm or bitstream.
It converts all video to 1080p hdmi to hdtv.
It is all powerful.
and Its a beautiful machine.
It is future proof
