Never touch the end of the cable or the socket on the device receiving the cable. Oil from your skin or the cloth can further degrade the data transmission or even damage the glass filament. In the past, I have used compressed air canisters that you would use for cleaning a keyboard. Be careful not to touch the end of the cable. One other possibility is that the filament inside the cable is already cracked from too severe of a bend or crimp. If that is the case buy a new cable.

simple rag and windex (window cleaner) will do the trick - sound quality issue could be something else.
optical digital connections either work or dont work since the connectoin is with light not electrical connection.

I would try using fine steel wool to get those ends on the connectors nice and shiny so they make a good connection. If the tray was left open , try using one of the smallest attachments on your vacun cleaner to **** out any dust.Clean all your connections, even the audio cable, but have the power off. Of course you knew that , eh ?lol !
