Most good AV receivers have the ability to switch between a movie mode (like Dolby Surround) and 5 channel or two channel stereo. That way, you can tailor the sound to the source. YOu prbably realize that there is a specific recording standard for 5/7 channel movies, but there isn’t one for music. Thus, it is useful to be able to switch between the various surround modes to what sounds best for you. I know Onkyo & Denon both offer this. So, you should be fine with just one AV receiver to do both.

Most good receivers you would purchase for a home theatre experience make excellent amplifiers for listening to music. You would just switch modes on the receiver to the spot you have desginated for your CD Player, etc. Also, there are other formats you may want to explore such as DualDisc DVDs and SACDs. These are high quality audio discs that are available for purchase and sound incredible when played on a compatible player hooked up to a quality receiver and speaker systems Some of the discs are recorded in multiple channels, some are just 2 channels. Some recordings are better than others but most will make an ordinary CD sound poor in comparison. Check them out as well. A ’stereo system’ is kind of an older term these days it seems, as modern receivers can decode so many newer formats.
