  2. Short answer: yes.

    Long answer: The first blu-ray players would not upscale and could not play standard DVDs. I’m not sure about the early HD-DVD players. But now all players will take SD DVDs and upscale them to HD.

  3. Yes. Please be aware though that if you want to invest in a High Definition player to go with Blu-Ray and not HD-DVD (it’s a dead technology being discontinnued). ALL blu-ray players can play blu-ray discs as well as DVDs. THey will upscale the picture quality of standard dvds and make them look better. Contrary to what another poster said…Blu-ray players have ALWAYS been able to play standard dvds. Some of them didn’t upscale them at first. But now with any blu-ray player you get the upscaling as well as DVD backward compatability.
