Nick asked:
I have Insignia 200 watt home theatre SPEAKERS. They are five in number with each satellite speaker 30Watts and subwoofer 50Watts. I am hunting for a suitable receiver for my speakers. Anybody with knowledge of hooking up 5.1 channel system? Also someone could tell if I can use a 500 or 1000 Watt amplifier for the same if I get a good deal. Thanks
Bobbie

Speaker ratings are guidelines, for the most part. Unless you are really blasting the sound and are trying to blow out the windows or go deaf, most speakers will be fine with amps that produce more power than they are rated for. That said, a bad amp (cheapo), or carelessness could blow them out.
Go with quality all the way and you won’t have any problems.

You can’t go wrong w/ a Denon Receiver…most widely used in pro high quality home theaters. There is a $600 model that would probably be perfect for you. Visit Denon’s website, or

With the wattage rating of the speakers you have youll probably want to stay around 50 watts per channel on a 5.1 system. That is a total of about 300 watts.
I don’t even think you can get anything smaller for 5.1 unless you go with an all in one Home theater in a box system. And in many cases they work pretty good. Especially if you have a smaller room or are confined to an apartment. it really depends on what you are looking for in a sound/ home theater system.
500 to a1000 watts total is 2-3 times that, unless you get better speakers,I would not recommend it. With a good clean amp you can often drive speakers beyond their stated power rating but you most certainly can not double it or triple it in the case of 500-1000 watts and you must have 6 channels of output on the amp.

You will have two things to watch out for.
1) An amp with higher wattage output can kill those speakers quickly.
2) If those are 6ohm speakers, you need to search for a compatible amp. If you put them on an 8ohm receiver, they will likely burn it out over time.
I like Denon but the lowest rating is 75 watts. You will want to match a standard consumer sytem from BestBuy and the like.

How many watts a speaker has is not as important as how the speaker sounds.
