At least an X for optimal movies experience. Go to the movie theater and check it out for yourself - the best seats - to my taste - are about the same distance form the screen as it’s diagonal size.
Widescreen - dimensions depend on your projector capabilities.
But you should seek an advise from the professional installer.

There are 2 theories:
THX: try to create a 23 degree edge to edge
SMTP: Based on visual acuity
Try the viewing distance calculator below to get both numbers.

1. sit at your favourite spot
2. Measure the distance from the wall. Mark it (horizontally) so that it’s just within your field of vision just to be sure nothing is in the way. Usually a 1 to 1 ratio works fine (sit 4′ away, screen can be 4′ wide)
3. mark about 3′ from the ground to be the bottom of the screen and measure how high up you can go.
if the width to height available ratio is at least 16:9, your good to go.
eg. If you’re sitting 10′ away, you screen can be up to 10′ wide. If you have at least 5.6′ height, then you can have a 10′ x 5.6′ screen. Otherwise, go as wide as the height allows you to go.
Then when you go buy a screen, it’s usually specified in inches diagonally.
