carpet is a good option to have due to it stopping acoustical reflection also acoustic foam on the walls or heavy drapes will help you want to get the room acousticly dead so you can hear just the speakers not echoing using bipole speakers for surround would help get you tru surround out of your rear speakers using bipole for your main would also be great good brands would be definitive technology klipsch paradigm martinlogan position your surround speakers at eyelevel when standing or higher but not too high and have your main at eyelevel when sitting you do not have to tip in the speakers at the listening area with these brands position your sub in a corner if needed some subs dont need the assistance of a corner good luck hope this helps

DIY channel on cable had a special on Home Theatre build out. It was very interesting. I would recommend when you are ready for speakers you buy it from a source that allows you to return them for something else within a certain timeframe. Speakers only reveal themselves in your own space.
As to acoustics, the show I watched showed them alternating between wall studs with different kinds of insulation. There are so many acoustical products out now that it all depends on budget and how crazy you want to get.
I have my system in a rather small room that is not dedicated to home theater, however the amp, speakers and processor are so good that you could never crank it all the way up and sit in the room.
Nice size room you have that is dedicated to Home Theater. If you were my neighbor I would be over with a case of beer as soon as you were ready to go!! LOL
