I would suggest looking into some entry level Sony home theater systems. I have been a Sony user for a long time and they make home theater components that aren’t as pricey as the Klipsch, Boston Acoustic, or Bose systems. Why don’t you go to the Best Buy web site and check out what Sony offers just so you can have that as a springboard and compare other brands. Also, if you talk to a Best Buy associate they could offer you some additional insight as to what’s quality and cheaper in price these days. Best of luck on your search!

Three things: Avoid Best Buy, Sony and Insignia, for home theatre. They;re all poor value for your money.
Now, you need to save up a few bucks, not that much, but more than a $179 all in one piece of junk system.
If you are going for a more entry level system, such as a 5.1 system, rather than 7.1, you can find some good gear and good deals on amazon.com. Heres a couple of examples.
Onkyo TX-SR304S 5.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Silver) $152.58, list price $199.99, free US shipping.
Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System (Set of Six, Black) $226.08 plus about $35 shipping within the US, list price of $599.95.
So, for $379.01, you’re set up with a great sounding combo, and one that allows for more inputs and outputs than a cheap all in one. That doesn’t include a DVD player, but they’re pretty cheap now, like several JVCs for $50.

Yamaha’s YHT-370. It’s the best home theater in-a-box system on the market, let along affordable (less than $500.00) to buy.
