I am an amateur electronics buff who can just about do some effective point to point soldering of hobby circuits. Can someone kindly tell where I can find step by step instructions on piecing together a low cost, reasonably good quality Home Theatre System with 5 three way sorround sound speakers, 1 sub woofer, a dvd player and an lcd projector?

If you already have an HTS, then it may have an Optical and/or Coaxial input(s). Some have HDMI input(s).
Also the DVD Player you have, may have an Optical and/or Coaxial output(s). Some have HDMI output(s).
If your LCD projector is HD, it may have HDMI input(s).
HDMI carry both Video and DD 5.1 Audio.
You would then connect the DVD HDMI Output to your HDTV, you will get Video and Stereo Sound on your TV.
Now, to get DD 5.1 sound from your HTS Speakers, you will need to connect an Optical or Coaxial cable from your DVD Player to your HTS.
If you also have a Satellite or Cable Receiver, you would also connect an Optical or Coaxial cable from it to your HTS.
If you need more details, email me.

I suppose it depends on how deep you would like to go…
If you mean buying different parts: Receiver, speakers, DVD player, tv, etc… then that’s one thing.
If you wan to physically build your own speakers, that’s something else entirely.
Check out DIY Audio for information regarding a true “Do-It-Yourself” system with home made speakers, amplifiers, etc…
If you want great information regarding everything audio/video, look at AVS Forum.
You may want to take a look around the General Home theater & Media/Game Rooms area. Do some reading, and then ask the folks there for some guidance. They can point you into the right direction.
Good luck with your new theater.

Paul F has a great answer.
I am wonderin why you want to solder instead of “plug n play”?
Radio Shack had, once upon a time, a great selection of advanced DIY projects.

define low cost. The forums linked will recommend expensive equipment to you.
I suggest you check out DIYprojector if that’s your fancy.
If you want cheap check out ebay for used projectors. I got mine for 150 it’s an Optoma ep719 very nice for the price. As good as most 720p/1080i projectors.
Remember to look for a high contrast ratio sub 2000 ANSI lumens(high lumens aren’t good for home theater)
Infinity Beta’s or a full primus set would be a good budget speaker system(see ebay).
Dayton makes budget subwoofers. DIY ones too.
As far as receiver you know electronics so you might pick up a broken receiver and do some repairing on it. Or just get a used one.
This is kinda the way I did it.
My entire home theater is budget except the 40gig PS3.
