  1. It is receiver only, you have to buy speakers.

  2. That is a really high-end receiver, but it is NOT a ‘box’ set that comes with speakers. You must buy the family of speakers separately.

This is NOT a bad thing as Yamaha makes great receivers, but they do not make speakers. This allows you to buy expensive and sensitive speakers for music, or less expensive speakers for home theater.

Now - all DVD’s and HDTV sound is only 5.1. This means 5 tone-matched speakers and a good self-powered subwoofer.

The “11.2″ is … a bit fake. Yamaha put circuits in to ’steal’ sound from the main 5 speakers to feed others. It is NOT the way the movie was made to be heard. While Yamaha does a good job of this type of thing - it’s not required to have 11 speakers and some would say it’s a bad thing because it changes the way the sound was designed to be heard.

    My advice:

    - Audition some speakers and purchase a 5 speaker set from a real speaker company. Energy, Polk, Definitive, MartinLogan, B&W, etc. are all top names. Just take some music CD’s out and listen.

    - Purchase a outstanding subwoofer from either SVS Woofers or HSU Research. A powerful, smooth sub is the secret to an impressive home theater.

Get everything setup, adjusted and listen to it for several weeks.

Later - after reading the manual and deciding how Yamaha wants you to setup the other speakers - you can buy more small speakers and try expanding the number of speakers.

But I suspect that you could double the cost of your speakers and only get a slight improvement in the sound over a good 5.1 system.

    Hope this helps.
