  1. No, it won’t work. Why do you need to take audio output from the TV anyway? You are supposed to connect all your sources - video and audio - to the HT receiver. It processes and amplifies the audio, and sends the video from your selected source to the TV. The TV needn’t handle the audio at all.

  2. No, output to output doesn’t work

NOTE: The following may not apply to you, especially if you already familiar with consumer electronics.

If you can only find ‘home theatre systems’ that have only optical OUTPUTS, then either
    a) You may have misread the connection labels
    b) Your definition of a ‘hts’ might be need a little redefining

‘Home Theatre system’ term can be broken down to 2 basic themes: 1) A component entertainment system, including separate Audio Video Receiver, speakers, and source devices (cable/sat box, dvd, blu-ray, cd, etc..). The AV receivers of decent build will have at least 1 each of optical and coaxial digital audio INPUTS

or, 2) a ‘Home Theater in a Box” solution that bundles a dvd player, AV receiver, and speakers into a single brand package. These systems might have a single auxiliary optical input, if included at all.

The only time a ‘hts’ would not include a digital audio input, would be the more ‘economical’ models (cheap), older/outdated models, and clock radios…. :)
P.S. As posted by previous user, you can connect all devices to a AV receiver - which will act as a AV switcher. However, with certain ‘hts’ systems you may need to connect all devices to the TV, then connect the TV audio OUTPUT to the ‘hts’. Refer to the manuals to confirm if this configuration is possible - whether optical or analog.
