A DVD player that old is unlikely to be able to read the disc, but it mostly depends on how powerful the laser unit is and/or the brand of the unit. Dual layer DVD-Rs didn’t exist in 2002, as the DVD format itself was only about 5 years old. My brother had a Panasonic player from 1999 and it wouldn’t even read regular DVD-Rs. I’d suggest just using a standard -R disc.
