dvd players
D_Icon asked:

I have quite a large DVD collection and of course, they don’t look all that great on my 46 1080p TV. Anyone disappointed that they bought one? Anyone totally excited that they did? Opinions?
I have a Blu-Ray Player and I have a PS3. Someone posted that the PS3 will upconvert DVDs as well but I doubt that. I’m about to put them side by side though and test that theory!

  1. They certainly are worth there wait. And will greatly improve your viewing quality. You might also consider getting a sony blu-ray player. I know Blu-rays are expensive(unless you use netflix!) but they can play normal dvds and upconvert them to 1080p usually. Either way get an upconverting player.

  2. i bought a up-converting dvd player.. 2 to be exact.. Panasonic S97.. it does up-convert and you will notice a difference.. but it wont be night and day difference like you would find if you hooked a blu-ray player up.. up-converting dvd players are fairly cheap ranging at $100.. if you want to buy a blu-ray player which also doubles as an up-converting dvd player for $250ish..

  3. I like up-conversion dvd players. I definitely think they are worth it, especially at the price. If you are looking around, check out the Toshiba XDE-500, I’ve heard good things about it and you can generally find them online for less than $100. Good Luck!

  4. A good upconverter that goes to 1080/24p will have a big improvement and is almost as good as actual HDDVD/BluRay discs, which to me makes that worth more than going to BR considering the cost.

DVD’s can be upconverted to near BR quality if the u/c goes up to 1080/24p. The widescreen and hi-def quality DVDs work best for upconversion and all DVD’s have the screen width info in small print on the back. Non w/s is 1.66:1, w/s is 1.85:1 or higher (2.02, 2.44, etc.) - anything wider than 1.85:1 gives the black bars on the top and bottom of a wide screen HDTV.

  5. Our regular DVD’s look fabulous when played on my son’s new PS3 and our large HDTV. It upconverts DVD’s in addition to playing Blu-ray discs… personally, I’m about as pleased with the regular DVD’s through it as I am with Blu-rays.

  6. For the money that you spend on a decent upconverting DVD player, then you might as well buy a BR player. Oppo is one of the top manufacturers of upconverting players. Give them a try. And it is not, better than viewing an HD DVD or BR movie– no comparison. Keep in mind that upconverting players have to have a pretty good processor to fill in the blanks– remember you’re basically trying to take a 480p source and converting it to 1080i/p… the processor is doing all the compensating so sometimes it is not accurate. Someone mention something about aspect ration above– aspect ratio has nothing to do with it.. and he has it backwards and AR of 1:85 will fill a 16:9 screen, you’ll get black bars when the AR is 2:40.
